Raycom Sports’ multi-Emmy Award-winning summer television series, “Havoline Football Saturdays,” continues its eleventh season this summer with Episode 2. The series, with six one-hour episodes, is hosted by Tim Brando and syndicated in 92 markets throughout the country.
This week’s show features Brando travelling to the Hike-A-Way Ranch in Paris, Texas to sit down with Hall of Fame Head Coach Gene Stallings. One of the original Junction Boys, Stallings talks about his early years in Paris and playing for Bear Bryant at Texas A&M and later coaching with him at Alabama. Stallings also tells Tim about his return to Tuscaloosa as the Crimson Tide’s head coach in 1990 and how he coached them to a national title two years later. Stallings retired from the sidelines in 1996, but has stayed close to Tuscaloosa through his work with the Rise School.
The Stallings Center at The Rise School is named after the head coach for his work there and the impact his son Johnny had on the community. Johnny Stallings was born in 1962 with Down Syndrome and a heart defect but that did not stop him from standing beside his father throughout his life. The head coach became an advocate for special needs children and began working with Rise, a center for children with special needs, upon his arrival to Alabama in 1990. Rise has become a leader in the community with over 100 children enrolled at the school. Hear about the special bond between Coach Stallings and Johnny and the impact the two of them have had in Tuscaloosa.
